The Hidden Layers of SoHo

SoHo's twenty-six blocks contain the largest concentration of cast-iron architecture anywhere in the world. Walk down Greene Street and you'll pass facades that were designed to mimic Renaissance palaces — but built cheaply from iron molds so 19th-century textile manufacturers could show off without breaking the bank. The building at 112 Prince Street still wears its original cast-iron front, a quiet monument to an era when this neighborhood was the industrial engine of lower Manhattan.

Before the galleries and the boutiques, SoHo was known as "Hell's Hundred Acres" — a district of sweatshops and warehouse fires so dangerous that the city nearly demolished the entire neighborhood in the 1960s to build an expressway. Artists moved into the abandoned factory lofts illegally, turning industrial floors into studios. That act of creative defiance saved SoHo and transformed it into the art-world epicenter it became in the 1970s and 80s.
