SoHo Secret Bars.
Behind SoHo's cast-iron facades, Prohibition-era bars that never closed — and new ones that carry the tradition.
Hidden Speakeasies of SoHo
SoHo's dense collection of 19th-century cast-iron buildings created an ideal environment for Prohibition-era speakeasies. The buildings' commercial ground floors, deep basements, and interconnected cellar passages allowed bar operators to set up hidden drinking rooms with multiple escape routes. When federal agents came through the front, patrons could exit through basement tunnels that connected to adjacent buildings. Many of these sub-street-level spaces were sealed after Prohibition ended and remained hidden behind walls and false floors for decades. Renovation projects in SoHo buildings regularly uncover blocked-off rooms, vintage bottles, and the remains of old bar fixtures.
Today, SoHo's speakeasy tradition lives on in bars that honor the neighborhood's hidden-drinking heritage. Ear Inn at 326 Spring Street has served drinks since 1817 — making it one of the oldest bars in New York — and survived Prohibition by operating as a restaurant that happened to serve alcohol. The building's original facade, with its faded "BAR" sign partially obscured (the owner covered the B to read "EAR" during the landmark designation process), is one of the most photographed in the neighborhood. Newer establishments carry on the concealment tradition with unmarked entrances, basement access, and interiors designed to evoke the Prohibition atmosphere.
