Converted warehouses, film legends, and a firehouse you've definitely seen before.
TriBeCa: The Triangle Below Canal
TriBeCa — the Triangle Below Canal Street — was once Manhattan's primary distribution hub, packed with warehouses that stored everything from eggs to textiles. The neighborhood's wide streets and massive buildings were designed for horse-drawn carts, not pedestrians. By the 1970s, most of the warehouses had been abandoned, and artists began converting them into lofts — following the same pattern that had transformed SoHo a decade earlier. The 19th-century mercantile buildings along Washington Street and Harrison Street remain some of the finest examples of commercial Federal-style architecture in the city.
Hook & Ladder Company 8 at 14 North Moore Street became world-famous as the Ghostbusters firehouse in the 1984 film — and it's still an active firehouse today, complete with a replica Ghostbusters logo painted by fans that the FDNY has quietly tolerated for years. A few blocks away, Robert De Niro co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 specifically to revitalize the neighborhood after September 11th — the festival now draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and has helped turn TriBeCa into the most expensive residential neighborhood in Manhattan.
