True Crime Walking Tours in New York City

Dark New York City alley with noir atmosphere for true crime walking tour

The Five Points, the intersection of five streets in what is now Chinatown and Civic Center, was the most dangerous neighborhood in 19th-century America. Gangs like the Dead Rabbits and the Bowery Boys fought for control of blocks so overcrowded that single tenement rooms housed a dozen people. The Old Brewery, a converted commercial building on the site of today's Columbus Park, was considered the most dangerous building in the city — police refused to enter it, and an 1852 demolition revealed human remains in the walls. The neighborhood was eventually razed in one of the city's first slum clearance projects, but the streets still follow the same paths.

New York's true crime history extends well beyond the 19th century. The 1906 murder of Stanford White by millionaire Harry Thaw in the rooftop theater of Madison Square Garden was the first "trial of the century" in American media. Murder Inc., the Mafia's enforcement arm, operated out of Midnight Rose's candy store in Brownsville, Brooklyn, in the 1930s and 40s. The Son of Sam terrorized the city in 1977, and the addresses where his victims were found are still visible, unmarked, on residential streets in Queens and the Bronx.
