LES Cold Cases.
Tenement murders, gang wars, and the blocks where crime shaped a neighborhood.
True Crime History of the Lower East Side
The Lower East Side was the most densely populated place on Earth at the turn of the 20th century. Immigrant families — Jewish, Italian, Chinese, Irish — crowded into tenement apartments so small that an entire family might share a single room with no windows. This density bred desperation, and desperation bred crime. The Eastman Gang, led by Monk Eastman, controlled the blocks below Houston Street through a combination of violence and political patronage. Eastman himself — a squat, scarred man who kept a collection of pigeons on his tenement roof — was eventually murdered in 1920 outside a speakeasy on East 14th Street after surviving years of gang warfare.
The Allen Street murders of the 1890s and 1900s — a series of killings connected to the neighborhood's thriving sex-trafficking industry — went largely unsolved because the victims were immigrant women with no political power. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911, at the corner of Washington Place and Greene Street (just north of the Lower East Side), killed 146 garment workers, mostly young immigrant women, and exposed the dangerous working conditions that the neighborhood's residents endured daily. The building still stands, now part of NYU, with a small plaque that most passersby ignore.
