The Unsolved Mysteries of New York City

Foggy New York City street with mysterious atmosphere

The Dakota building at 72nd Street and Central Park West is famous as the site of John Lennon's murder in 1980 — but the building has accumulated mysteries since long before that night. Built in 1884, it was so far north of the city's developed areas that it was named "The Dakota" as a joke, comparing its remote location to the Dakota Territory. The building's architect, Henry Hardenbergh, included hidden passages, a private courtyard, and apartments with layouts so irregular that residents have reported discovering rooms they didn't know existed. The Dakota's resident list reads like a catalog of New York aristocracy, and the building's co-op board remains one of the most secretive in the city.

New York is full of missing landmarks whose absence is itself a mystery. The original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on 34th Street was demolished to build the Empire State Building — but photographs of its grand interiors suggest that much of the hotel's ornamental ironwork and stained glass was removed before demolition and simply vanished. No museum or private collection has claimed the pieces. Similarly, Penn Station's demolished eagles — massive stone sculptures that adorned the building's entrance — were never recovered. The city's history is riddled with objects, buildings, and even people who disappeared without satisfactory explanation.
