Decode DUMBO.
Brooklyn's waterfront turned open-air gallery, framed by two iconic bridges.
DUMBO: Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass
DUMBO — Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass — is a neighborhood defined by its frame. Stand on Washington Street between the old brick warehouses and the Manhattan Bridge arches directly overhead, and you'll see a view of the Empire State Building that has become one of the most photographed compositions in the city. But before the photographers came the merchants. The Empire Stores, a row of Civil War-era coffee and tobacco warehouses on the waterfront, sat empty for decades before being converted into shops, offices, and the Brooklyn Historical Society's satellite gallery. Their thick walls still carry the scent of a century of stored goods.
Jane's Carousel, a 1922 Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel, was rescued from an amusement park in Youngstown, Ohio, and installed in a Jean Nouvel-designed glass pavilion on the DUMBO waterfront in 2011. It's one of the finest surviving examples of a wooden carousel in the United States. Nearby, the cobblestone streets between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges still follow their original 19th-century grid, and the former industrial buildings now house some of Brooklyn's most influential art studios and tech companies. The transformation from waterfront warehouse district to cultural hub took less than twenty years.
