Abandoned Places in New York City
The old City Hall subway station is the crown jewel of New York's abandoned places. Opened in 1904 as the showpiece of the city's first subway line, it was closed in 1945 because its curved platform couldn't accommodate longer, modern trains. The station's Guastavino tile arches, brass chandeliers, and colored-glass skylights remain intact beneath City Hall Park, preserved in a kind of subterranean time capsule. You can catch a fleeting glimpse of it by staying on the 6 train past Brooklyn Bridge as it loops around — the lights of the abandoned station flash through the windows for a few seconds.
On Roosevelt Island, the Renwick Smallpox Hospital stands as a stabilized ruin in Southpoint Park. Designed by James Renwick Jr. (who also designed St. Patrick's Cathedral) and built in 1856, the hospital treated smallpox patients quarantined from the city. After the hospital closed, the building deteriorated for over a century, and its Gothic Revival walls now frame open sky where ceilings used to be. At Fort Tilden on the Rockaway Peninsula, abandoned military buildings from both World Wars sit among overgrown dunes — concrete gun emplacements, ammunition bunkers, and observation towers slowly being reclaimed by sand and salt air.
